The lust for answers

Alex sat at his desk, staring at the open file in front of him. He was pretending to be immersed in his work. The truth was, he had been reading the same line for the tenth time. He kept seeing the man in his eyes again and again. A man who was so loyal to the man that had hired him preferred to kill himself rather than reveal his master’s secret.

The questions hounded Alex. Why had Jack wanted Terry dead? Clearly, the fact that his employer was in a coma hadn’t stopped the hired gun from carrying out his task. What did Terry know? She had witnessed Aden’s murder. Who had she seen that night? Alex ruled out Jack as the possible killer, but why would he be afraid of Terry if Jack was innocent? What was going on?

Alex knew that asking Terry was hopeless. She had survived the attack and pulled through after six hours of surgery. And while the doctors had healed the wounds on her body, there was very little they could do about the state of her mind. The attack had left her traumatized, scared of her own shadow. It was difficult to get her to talk, even as Beatrice. She often stared into the distance, whimpering and crying as if battling demons unseen by everyone else.

The man who had attacked her had been identified as Adam Willow. A man with a criminal past starting from petty theft and progressing to murder. He had no family except for a grandmother who lived in a care facility. A few inquiries confirmed that an unknown sponsor had agreed to pay for the grandmother’s care every month, and the cash came as promised. It was enough for Alex to figure out why the man had preferred death over being captured. His loyalty to his employer ensured that his grandmother was taken care of.

Alex sat there, contemplating how far humans would go for love, greed, and hide the truth.

“That must be a super interesting case file,” Dale’s voice came from behind. “I have never seen you reading anything with this much interest.”

Alex looked up to see his partner, who was walking toward him with the help of a crutch. For a long time, Alex had worked alone. This was how he preferred doing things. He didn’t like having to wait for others, and he didn’t like having to offer explanations to obvious things. As a result, Alex had been nothing short of an ass to partners who were assigned to him. He treated them like crap, often left them behind and uninformed, and rarely let them be a part of the actual case.

Eventually, they all requested to be transferred, and Alex had earned his reputation as the dreaded partner. Dale would have shared a similar fate had he not been captured by the organization Alex had been hunting a few months back. Alex had seen first hand as his partner was tortured in the most brutal manner and still refused to give up Alex’s cover.
